Gladys (Way) “Glad” Horner
Fishertown
Gladys (Way) “Glad” Horner, 89, resident of the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, formerly of Annandale, VA, and Fishertown, PA, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, March 7, 2015.
Gladys was born to John E. and Alice Vera (Miller) Way in East St. Clair Township, Bedford County, on November 6, 1925, and resided in Fishertown, PA until 1947. Gladys’ brother, Harry, preceded her in death in 1947 at age 22 from leukemia. She married Harold John Horner of Point, PA on January 14, 1947. Harold was a CWO 2 in the Army and served as a World War II Veteran in the European Theatre including the Battle at Normandy Beach and The Battle of the Bulge. They were stationed at Yakota Air Force Base, Japan, Fort Belvoir, Alexandria, Virginia, Fort Huachuca, Arizona, Yuba City, California, then to Annandale, Virginia (a suburb of Washington, DC) where they retired from active duty and Harold continued as an Army Engineer at Fort Belvoir.
Gladys and Harold were married for fifty-two years until his death in November, 1999. They had three sons, Gregory Harold of Manassas, VA, Bradley Way of Luray, VA, and Rodney Samuel Lane Way of Arlington, VA and Fishertown, PA. Gladys was a graduate of the Washington (DC) School of Business. She was a realtor with Mount Vernon Realty, Alexandria, VA. Gladys was a member of The Arlington Assembly of God Church for approximately thirty years. Prior to that, she and her family attended First Assembly of God Church in Alexandria, VA, for twenty-seven years where she was an administrative assistant, singer/soloist, and supervised the clothing ministry to the homeless of the area. She participated in the church choir and trios, sang solos, and played the piano, organ and taught private guitar lessons. She was known for her gourmet cooking and entertaining through church and military circles. She was also known for her love of animals and animal rescue through local organizations.
Gladys loved people and was a “people person.” She bragged about her family and her friends. She loved her church. She was very proud of her three boys. Her cousin, Jane Foor Alleman, was “the daughter she never had.”
A “Home Going Celebration” service will take place at noon on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at the Fishertown Bible Church, Valley Road, Fishertown, with a luncheon following in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be in the church cemetery at the convenience of the family.
