Donald Fleegle Obituary

Donald W. Fleegle

Alum Bank

Donald W. Fleegle, 89, of Alum Bank, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 12, 2020 at home.

He was born on November 2, 1931, in Alum Bank; son of Jordan and Estella (Dull) Fleegle.

On October 28, 1951, he married Betty M. (Miller) Fleegle, who preceded him in death on November 6, 2018.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Frank and his late wife, Anna Fleegle.

He is survived by his children, Tonya Fleegle and fiance Donald Tompson; W. Ralph and wife Jeannine; grandson, Conner Fleegle and wife Nina; great-grandson, Gareth Fleegle; sisters, Thelma Horvath (late husband, Andrew); Junella Sell (late husband, Dennis); Sandra Shaffer and husband Tom.

Don graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1949. He grew up in Ryot, writing a book about his experience helping the neighbors with farming, butchering, painting, and construction. He was an avid hunter all his life and especially enjoyed hunting turkey and deer as his favorite hobby. He retired in 1982 from Bethlehem Steel Mills after 31 years of service as a foreman of the Mechanical Paint Department; but he never retired from life.

Don was an honorary member of the Alum Bank Fire Company, Chestnut Ridge Lion’s Club member and honored with the Melvin Jones award, founding board member of LOVE, Inc. of Bedford County, helped to establish and was a board member of Bethel Park Camp Meeting.

He was an active and faithful member in the Alum Bank United Methodist Church where he served in many different capacities over a period of 70 plus years including becoming a soloist in his 70’s, singing the old-time gospel songs. He lived his faith in God and tried to show it in all ways.

As a friend he was loyal and dependable and helped many in his lifetime. One of Don’s greatest joys was visiting the nursing homes regularly, where he would share stories of by-gone days with residents.

Don will be deeply missed by his family and friends who will cherish their many memories of him.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
