Charlotte Jane “Charlie” (Grabill) Smith
New Paris
Charlotte Jane “Charlie” (Grabill) Smith, 67, of 190 Hillside Drive, New Paris, went peacefully to be with her Lord and loving family members awaiting her beautiful soul in Heaven Saturday, September 5, 2015 at 8:07 a.m. at Conemaugh’s Good Samaritan Hospital, Johnstown, after a long courageous battle with vulvar cancer, she was surrounded by love and the thing she treasured most, her family.
She was the second of four beautiful daughters blessed to the late Stanley Martin Grabill, Sr. and Martha Elizabeth (Mulhollen) Paulson, born on Sunday, October 19, 1947 at her family farm in Imler. About 49 years ago she met one of the loves of her life, Glenn Edward Smith, and they were married on Aug. 5, 1978 in Schellsburg. They recently celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary.
Together they had 3 children who she adored and loved beyond measure, Tammy Sue Smith, fiancé of Richard DeBone Jr. of New Paris; William Glenn Smith, husband of Michelle (Hoyt) of Johnsonburg; and Tina Louise Smith, fiancé of Karl Martin of Alum Bank.
Charlotte loved and raised many of her grandchildren as if they were her own children; this was seen by the incredibly close bond they shared. Her grandchildren are Amanda Dawn Smith, wife of Bobbie Dunmeyer of Fishertown; Jessica Layton (Tyler Bartholow) of Bedford; Alissa Smith of Bedford; Levi Claar of Claysburg; Christopher Svencer of Bedford; Logan and Christian Krug of Johnsonburg; and Mathew and Tyler DeBone of Pittsburgh.
Her 6 great grandchildren, Nevaeh, Nevanaeh, Nelyze, Joddan and Jaxxan Dunmeyer, and Brayden Bartholow had their grandma wrapped around their little fingers.
She is also survived by the following siblings: Howard (Melva) Grabill and Perry (Esther) Grabill, both of Imler; Loretta Rodrigues of TX; Janet Ickes(Ray Barefoot) of Weyant; Carol Kleman of Portage; Gary (Deb) Grabill and Larry (Mary) Grabill both of Imler; Darlene (Daniel) Wentz; Arlene (Glenn) Martin; Shirley (Elmer) May of Schellsburg; Robert “Tex” Grabill; Beverly “Sue” Quinn of TX; Stanley Grabill Jr. of MD and Mary Seymour. Also survived by her father-in-law Cloy W. Smith, of Fishertown, as well as the following sister and brother in laws: Jean Ann (Ed) George of Spring Hope; Betty “Betsy” (Robert) Lamison of Hanover; Bernard (Lilli) Smith of Alum Bank; Linda (John) Roy of Everett and Janet (Mark) Fleegle of Fishertown. She also has an aunt, Della Smith, of Johnstown, and many aunt and uncle in laws and numerous special nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Rose (Paulson) Weyant and Evelyn (Grabill) Layton; brother, Arville Grabill; and an infant twin of her daughter Tina.
Charlotte attended the Chestnut Ridge and Claysburg school districts. For 20 years she worked at the Bedford Quality Inn and in the past 8 years at Friendship Village Campground where she made many close friends who loved her dearly, and that she loved in return. She was a member of the Chestnut Ridge Independent Fellowship Church and faithfully attended until her health prevented so, even through her battle she never lost her faith in God. She loved taking care of her family and friends, which meant a lot of cooking and baking for them. She spoiled her beloved dog Sarafina. She loved her beach vacations with her sisters. She had a heart of gold, anyone was welcome in her home and became part of the family at picnics and the holiday dinners. She would give anything she had to help someone else.
Friends and family will be received Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2015 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Chestnut Ridge Independent Fellowship Church. The Funeral service will be held Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Daniel Oldham officiating at the Chestnut Ridge Independent Fellowship Church.
Interment will be at the Old Stone Church Cemetery, Fishertown.
The family wants to give a special thanks to the Palliative Care Unit at Conemaugh, the CRIF Church, Friendship Village, also the Friendship Village Missonary Church members, and anyone else who touched her life.
Our Family Angel- “An angel in the home they say, will guard the family night and day.”
Forget Me Not- " I give you this one thought to keep, I am with you still- I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight, I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not think of me as gone, I am with you still in each new dawn."
